How to write a compound prescription

Please include the following information. We are happy to consult with you regarding your patient’s prescription if you have questions.

Transdermal Gel Patient Information – 3ML Syringes

Instructions

1. Remove cap from end of syringe.
2. Gently depress plunger so the rubber stopper moves one small line in the syringe to dispense the prescribed amount of gel on to gloved finger (0.1ML = one small line on the syringe).
3. Spread gel evenly over hairless skin of inner ear pinna. Do not push gel down into ear canal.
4. Rub in well.
5. Replace storage cap on end of syringe.

Tips

• Storage: store at room temperature and out of reach of children
• Do not use a cotton swab to apply as the gel will adhere to the cotton and not the pet's skin.
• Do not use after expiration date
• If gel gets on your skin, wash area with soap and water.
• If build up of gel occurs in the ear, wipe away with a damp cotton ball

M-Pen Transdermal Gel Dosing Instructions

Oral Suspension/ Adapt-A-Cap Patient Instructions

1. Replace white cap on prescription bottle (child resistant) with blue adapt-a-cap (NOT child resistant). Press down and twist clockwise until tight.
2. Fit oral syringe tip into the blue cap orifice and invert assembly.
3. Draw out the prescribed dose into the dispensing syringe by pulling back on the white plunger.
4. Invert assembly again so it is right side up. Liquid will not drain out of syringe! Grasping the dispensing syringe by the barrel (NOT the plunger), quickly remove the syringe.
5. Close snap cap to seal bottle and store as indicated. You may also store with the dispensing syringe inserted in the orifice, but be careful when the bottle is shaken.

Tips on Prescribing HRT

Oral Suspension / Patient Instructions

1. Remove white cap (child resistant) from prescription bottle using a counter- clockwise twisting motion with gentle downward pressure.
2. Fit oral syringe TIP into the white port orifice and invert assembly.
3. Draw out the prescribed dose into the dispensing syringe by pulling back on the white plunger.
4. Invert assembly again so it is right side up. Liquid will not drain out of syringe! Grasping the dispensing syringe by the barrel (NOT the plunger), quickly remove the syringe.
5. Administer dose to patient and replace white child resistant cap to seal bottle and store as indicated.
6. Please call the pharmacy with any questions.

RAPID DISSOLVE TABLET (RDT) / PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking for at least 15 to 20 minutes immediately before and after sublingual administration.
2. With clean, dry hands, remove one tablet from the prescription container.
3. Place the tablet under your tongue (sublingual).
4. Allow the tablet to fully dissolve in place. Do not chew, crush, or swallow the tablet whole.
5. Replace cap tightly after each use.
6. Take medication exactly as prescribed by your provider.

TIPS:

• Storage: Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
• Handle tablets with dry hands to prevent premature dissolving.
• If a dose is missed, follow your provider’s instructions or contact the pharmacy.
• Do not use after the expiration date listed on the prescription label.

Formula Information

Dutasteride, a potent 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can shrink hair follicles and lead to hair loss. This makes it an effective component for treating conditions like androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male or female pattern baldness.

Minoxidil, the second active ingredient, is a well-known vasodilator that has been proven to stimulate hair growth and slow balding. It functions by widening blood vessels and opening potassium channels, which allows more oxygen, blood, and nutrients to the follicle. This results in a revitalization of shrunken hair follicles, increasing their size, and prolonging the growth phase of the hair cycle.

Tretinoin, a derivative of vitamin A, enhances the therapeutic effects of minoxidil by increasing the penetration of minoxidil into the hair follicle and may also help to normalize the scalp skin shedding cycle, which can contribute to hair loss. Additionally, tretinoin is known for its ability to promote collagen production and reduce fine lines and wrinkles, making this formulation beneficial for skin rejuvenation as well.

Finasteride, a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, is commonly used to treat androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can shrink hair follicles and result in hair loss. The inclusion of Finasteride in this formulation may help in reducing hair loss and promoting hair regrowth.

Hydrocortisone, a mild topical corticosteroid, is included for its anti-inflammatory properties. It can help alleviate inflammatory skin conditions, such as dermatitis or eczema, by reducing swelling, itching, and redness. Its presence in the formulation can also aid in reducing scalp inflammation associated with hair loss.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) supports hair growth indirectly by improving scalp health, strengthening hair strands, and enhancing follicle resilience.

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3 that plays a key role in cellular energy production and repair, which is essential for healthy hair follicles and scalp function. While it does not directly stimulate hair growth, it creates an optimal environment for hair to grow

Melatonin may promote hair growth by prolonging the anagen (growth) phase, reducing hair shedding, and protecting hair follicles from oxidative stress.

1. Prolonging the anagen phase: Extends the active growth period of hair, delaying the transition to catagen and telogen phases.
2. Antioxidant protection: Neutralizes free radicals, reducing oxidative stress that can damage follicles and accelerate hair loss.
3. Stem cell protection: Shields hair follicle stem cells from oxidative damage and apoptosis, supporting long-term follicle regeneration.
4. Regulation of growth factors and gene pathways: Influences WNT and FOXO signaling, which are critical for follicle proliferation and cellular homeostasis.
